Describe your internship responsibilities:
As an intern for The Soyfoods Council, I developed recipes incorporating soy products that could potentially be used in food pantries and appeal to different age groups. My work required me to work in a research lab on campus, testing the properties of soy products and incorporating them into two different projects.
What did you enjoy most about this internship?
Having the opportunity to work with new ingredients such as tofu, soy milk, and soy flour opened up my creativity and made me more excited about future career opportunities. The internship turned out to be a great learning experience in many areas as I worked in a test kitchen and presented my recipes to a taste panel. I learned to make changes based on what the consumer desires and what is most appealing.
How has this experience impacted your future career plans?
This internship confirmed that I am going into the field I love, and that there are many options available when dealing with food and its different outlets.
What resources did you utilize to obtain this internship?
I utilized my major's coordinator, Erica Beirman, who let me know early this opportunity was becoming available. She provided me with all the information I needed to follow through with applying and accepting the internship.
What advice would you offer to other students seeking similar internships?
When you receive an internship, do not allow yourself to be closed-minded. Make bold moves, try new ingredients and flavors, and let this time be dedicated to experimenting. Use every resource at your disposal and every person involved should know your passion behind what you are doing.
