Young Alum of the Month: April Hook

Name:
April Hook
Title and Company:
Associate Attorney at McGrath North Mullin & Kratz, PC LLO in Omaha, NE
Hometown:
Leon, IA
Major and Graduation Date:
Agricultural Business, May 2007
Major Job/Position Responsibilities:

As an attorney at McGrath North I assist clients with all aspects of commercial litigation from the time a lawsuit is filed until trial (and, potentially, appeals) is concluded.  This includes, among other things, brief writing, court appearances, and motion practice.  In large part my work focuses on resolving disputes involving contracts, business torts, products liability and the Uniform Commercial Code.  I have also had the opportunity to work with clients on environmental litigation and compliance matters.

What you like most about your job/position:

It keeps me on my toes!  Every case presents a new and unique set of circumstances and issues.  As an attorney I have the opportunity to advocate for clients on a wide variety of matters, each of which allows me to exercise my problem-solving skills.  In addition, I have had the pleasure of working with great clients and colleagues, which makes my work even more rewarding!

What advice would you give to current students:

Enjoy your time at Iowa State and make sure to take advantage of all it has to offer.  The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences offers vast opportunities through study abroad trips, internships, clubs and organizations, all of which are incredibly worth-while.  Additionally, don’t be afraid to pursue a “non-traditional” agricultural career.  Although it may not be apparent from my title, my agricultural business degree and experiences have provided me significant advantage in practicing law and representing agricultural industries.  You may be surprised where your agricultural education can take you!
