Young Alum of the Month: Beth Dunham

Name:
Beth Dunham
Title and Company:
Editor/Writer, Office of Public Relations at University of Southern California School of Dentistry
Hometown:
Marshalltown, Iowa
Major and Graduation Date:
Biology, May 2007
Major Job/Position Responsibilities:

I keep track of all the news that happens here in the School - research advancements, clinical news, community health activities and more. I write material for USC's online and print outlets, organize and edit the School of Dentistry's PR publications, take photos, and help reporters and our experts work together on news stories.

What you like most about your job/position:

I love being the very first to hear an exciting story - and we have a lot of them!

What advice would you give to current students:

Don't be afraid to get creative with your education. For years I thought I had to choose between my love of science and my love of writing, but after talking with my advisor and Biology and JLMC faculty members, I was able to craft an educational plan that drew on both of my passions and put them to good use.

Favorite ISU class
BIOL 201 (now 211), "Principles of Biology 1" and BIOL 315, "Biological Evolution": Dr. Colbert's and Dr. Nason's teaching styles taught me a lot about how to teach science - especially the often-misunderstood concepts - to others in a fun, engaging way.

JLMC 347, "Science Communication": Dr. Abbott helped me to greatly improve my writing and showed us the techniques that help lay readers understand even the toughest scientific material.
