Young Alum of the Month: David Marin

Name:
David Marin
Title and Company:
Hardy Plant Specialist at Tangletown Gardens Minneapolis
Hometown:
Farley, IA
Major and Graduation Date:
Horticulture (emphasis in Nursery Management), May 2006
Major Job/Position Responsibilities:

My main responsibilities include caring for the plants in the garden center, and recommending plants to homeowners.  I also help with day-to-day maintenance of the garden center.

What you like most about your job/position:

I love helping people find the best plants for their specific situation.  Tangletown Gardens carries hundreds of different plants, many of them are unusual or hard to find.  Bringing these plants to the attention of homeowners is always a goal of mine.

What advice would you give to current students:

No matter what career you are pursuing, I would say having an open mind to learning as much as you can from people who have been working in the field is essential.  In your first jobs out of school be humble and don't act like you know everything.  Just because you read it in a book doesn't mean there isn't more to learn.  Always be willing to do some of the harder, dirtier jobs, this shows you are grounded and have put in the time.  Above all else love what you do!
