Young Alum of the Month: Emma Bruemmer

Name:
Emma Bruemmer
Title and Company:
State Urban Forestry Coordinator at Iowa Department of Natural Resources
Hometown:
Davenport, IA
Major and Graduation Date:
Forestry: Urban and Community Forestry emphasis, May 2008
Major Job/Position Responsibilities:

I work with communities throughout Iowa to plant, maintain and improve their urban forest and publicly owned trees.  I assist with tree inventories, urban forest management plans, mitigation planning for invasive species, updating tree ordinances, planting selection and much more.

What you like most about your job/position:

I have always wanted to work in the outdoors and have a career that helps people.  Urban forestry allows me to do both.  I enjoy helping communities increase the benefits trees provide for their citizens, such as clean air, clean water and an overall better place to live, work, and learn.

What advice would you give to current students:

The most important decision while in college is to find a field that you are passionate about and a career path that lets you pursue that passion.

Secondly, summer internships are significant in understanding if you will enjoy a position in a specific career path.  It is important to find summer work that maximizes your learning and builds that career experience.  Even if an internship is not required for your major, you still should consider it an important part of a college experience.

Lastly, preparing for job interviews is essential.  It is important to research and inquire about the job posting.  Practicing interview questions will help you anticipate and prepare for an interview.  Never shortchange the time preparing for a job you will love.
