In the hosptial, I work with a team of RDs to assess patients for nutritional risk. If they are at nutritional risk, we implement interventions to help counter this which sometimes involves alternative feeding methods. We also educate people on therapeutic diets. The hosptial also has outpatients in cardiac rehab and the cancer center that we are involved with. At the Diabetes Center, we work with diabetes nurse educators to educate patients on self management skills for their diabetes. This is done on a one-to-one basis as well as in a class setting. St. Anthony's is also a site for the Iowa State Dietetic Internship, so we also act as preceptors for the interns.
I enjoy the variety that my job offers. St. Anthony's is not a large hosptial, but it has many services that larger hosptials offer so the rural community does not have to commute so far to larger cities. Because of this, I get to work with many different nutritionally related diseases. I enjoy this challenge and that it keeps me well rounded. At the Diabetes Center, we often see people over longer periods of time. I enjoy seeing the patients learn to better control their disease from the information we teach.
Always keep an open mind to what you want in a career. Things that I thought I wouldn't enjoy in college turned out to be the parts of my career that are the most rewarding.
