Name:
Lee Christensen
Title and Company:
Associate Scientist II at Kraft -- Oscar Mayer
Hometown:
Royal, IA
Major and Graduation Date:
Animal Science (Food Science minor), May 2010
Major Job/Position Responsibilities:

My primary role is to work on food product formulas and follow those formulas through implementation in the plant.  I have the opportunity develop formulas, run test batches, and review product with our product team (includes: Marketing, Packaging, Quality, etc.).   In my role, I make sure that the formulas are safe, functional, and of course taste great.

What you like most about your job/position:

I love that my job is never the same from day to day.  I work on projects involving many different products, people, and plants.  It is a great opportunity to expand my knowledge of meat science and gain a better understanding of the Oscar Mayer business and the food industry.  Food product development is a great hybrid of scientific principle, creative thinking, and problem solving – a perfect combination that keeps me interested and excited to come to work each day.

What advice would you give to current students:

Get an internship early on in your college career.  Take a chance and try to get an internship out of your comfort zone.  Remember that college is not only about attending classes, it is about setting yourself up for a future career.  Internships are a great opportunity to ‘test drive’ a potential career and to broaden your network of contacts.  You will never regret taking a chance on an internship.  The worst possible outcome is that you have made friends with a group of people you would have not otherwise crossed paths with.
