Young Alum of the Month: Wes Phillips

Name:
Wes Phillips
Title and Company:
Forestry Technician, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (Forestry Division)
Hometown:
Dunlap, IL
Major and Graduation Date:
Forestry (Ecosystems Management), May 2011
Major Job/Position Responsibilities:

My main duties include, but are not limited to, prevention and suppression of forest fires, preparing land for timber sales, manage wildlife habitat, and assisting with cost share and tax programs for private landowners.

What you like most about your job/position:

What I like most of my job is I get to spend my days not behind a desk but outdoors.  I work to protect and sustainably manage our ecosystem and natural resources.  Every day is different, I never really know what to expect when I show up to work. I get to help and interact with the public and help them with their properties. It is exciting and I couldn’t picture myself doing anything else.

What advice would you give to current students:

The two best pieces of career advice I can give is to network as much as possible during school.  Get out and make those connections with people in your profession.  The second most important advice is to not get discouraged when job hunting after school.  It may take a couple years to find that dream job.

Favorite ISU class?

My favorite class at ISU would have to be the Fall Forestry Camp class.  What I liked most about this class, besides the fact it was three weeks in the Montana backcountry, was that we were exposed to real world natural resources issues.  The whole class was tailored to providing practical experience that we could use as practicing foresters.
