Young Alum of the Month: Erica Nelson, M.D.

Erica Nelson, M.D.Name:  Erica Nelson, M.D.

Hometown:  Fargo, ND

Major and Graduation Date:  B.S. Genetics with Psychology Minor, May 2016

Favorite ISU Class:  Abnormal Psychology of Children and Adolescents (PSYCH 335) was my favorite class.  I knew I loved working with children and this class solidified that.  While I did not work directly with children in this course, I did learn about the DSM-5 and how it is used to diagnosis psychological problems in children.  I enjoyed learning about the different psychology tools used to measure various aptitudes i.e. child development, adolescent personalities.

Job Title and Company:  Pediatric Intern Resident at Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital of Vanderbilt in Nashville, TN

A group of doctors looking at a projection screenMajor Job/Position Responsibilities: I am a recent medical school graduate who is starting her first year of post-graduate on-the-job training as a resident.  I am responsible for pediatric patient care under the supervision of senior residents and attending physicians.  I practice in outpatient and inpatient settings.  I am responsible for documenting all patient care.  I also perform common pediatric medical procedures including but not limited to lumbar punctures, intubations, and laceration repairs.

What you like most about your job/position? I love that I get to interact with children and build relationships with their parents.  There is nothing more gratifying in my opinion than caring for children from birth to adulthood.

What advice would you give to current students pursuing a career in Agriculture and Life Sciences? It is okay if you do not know what you want to do.  I decided to pursue a career in medicine late my sophomore year at ISU.  I even entered college thinking I would never become a doctor!  I would strongly encourage not rushing into a decision – make sure the decision you make is right for you.
