Young Alum of the Month: Rachel Pierce

Rachel PierceName:  Rachel Pierce

Hometown:  Columbus Junction, IA

Major(s) and Graduation Date:  Global Resource Systems, Environmental Studies, 2015

Favorite ISU class?  All of the Globe classes! Coming from a small town, I really enjoyed learning about various topics and issues from a global perspective. My Globe classes also helped prepare me for graduate school (University College Dublin, MSc in International Development).

Job Title and Employer:  Admission Counselor, University of Iowa

Major Job/Position Responsibilities:  As an Admission Counselor, I have the opportunity to work with prospective students, including first-year students, transfers, non-traditional or international students, and help guide them through their college search process.  Outside of meeting with these students on campus, I do weekly presentations highlighting what the University of Iowa has to offer to a large group of visiting students.  I also meet with them in their high schools, at college fairs, and even during large events hosted on our campus.  My primary territory is SE Iowa and Central Illinois, but my position also allows me to meet students from all over the country and world!

Rachel with friends and HerkyWhat you like most about your job/position?  This position allows me to make a positive impact in helping students find a program and path that allows them to work towards their goals, whether that is becoming a neurosurgeon or the next bestselling author.  I get to work with students that have big dreams!  Not one day looks the same and this position always keeps me on my toes.  I also work with a supportive team that has welcomed me without hesitation (…even though I’m a Cyclone)!

What advice would you give to current students pursuing a career in Agriculture and Life Sciences?  Study abroad!  The CALS Study Abroad Office has some great opportunities for students to gain a global experience through semester long and short-term programs.  I would also highly recommend an international internship.  I interned in Nicaragua and Ireland, and both experiences helped me grow as a professional and global citizen.  An international internship is such a unique experience and something that will make you stand out when applying for jobs.
