Name: Hannah Corey
Major: Agronomy (minor Entrepreneurial Studies)
Hometown/State: Lake City, IA
Title: Agronomy Intern
Location: Idaho Falls, ID
Describe your internship responsibilities: Last summer I worked with the Anheuser-Busch Agronomy Team in barley production. They contract with farmers in Idaho to raise the barley and A-B malts it for beer production. Three out of every six-packs of Budweiser’s beer are made with Idaho barley! I had three main projects that I worked on this summer: a Soil Health project, a Barley Production Guide and SmartBarley grower meetings. I was responsible for allocating my time to complete these projects in addition to various day-to-day tasks. At the end of my internship, I presented each project and a final presentation to upper management.
What did you enjoy most about this internship? This internship was exciting because I went into it completely clueless about Idaho, barley and how Anheuser-Busch runs their business. I had so much to learn and the people were more than happy to teach me. The best parts of my internship were definitely the Agronomy Team, the growers and the A-B people I worked with in Idaho. Everyone was extremely kind, welcoming and willing to put up with my millions of questions.
How has this experience impacted your future career plans? This internship gave me a clear vision of what I am looking for in a future employer. I need a company that truly values the American farmer, their agronomists and their employees to bring value to the business. The more companies I am involved in, the easier it is to narrow down which ones I fit into!
What resources did you utilize to obtain this internship? I originally discovered this internship through the Agronomy Department’s weekly newsletter, and immediately went to CyHire to check it out. Once I knew this was something I wanted to apply for, I headed to Mike’s office. He gave me the recruiter’s email address, so I could email her and express my interest in the position. All my interviews were via video calls, and I used the Career Services office to do these interviews as well!
What advice would you offer to other students seeking similar internships? Do not be afraid to apply for the internship of your dreams. Anheuser-Busch was only hiring three agronomy interns in the entire US, so at first, I was skeptical that I would be hired. However, I knew if I went into my interview thinking that, I wouldn’t get the job. I psyched myself up, walked into the interview with confidence and walked out with the job. Be confident in yourself and be confident in Iowa State’s ability to prepare you for these roles. Chances are you’re the best one for the job.
