Describe your internship responsibilities:
My summer project was to develop three new sausage flavors for application in Food Service- Convenience Stores. These flavors needed to be unique to the market place as well as identifiable with consumers. To do this, I worked to establish the spices to get the desired flavor. I then did several test runs within the pilot plant to determine and overcome any processing concerns. Finally, the product was evaluated by the R&D team.
What did you enjoy most about this internship?
Johnsonville has an excellent culture. There is a deep sense of pride that is evident among the employees. They take ownership of their specific role in the company and are excited and willing to share their knowledge. Because of their willingness to share, I was able to learn more than I thought possible about the company in its entirety.
How has this experience impacted your future career plans?
I can now be assured that I am going to be entering a career that I love and am excited about. Without this internship, my career would only be what my professors told me it would be. Now, I know what it is really like and how I can develop further as a student to be a better employee
What resources did you utilize to obtain this internship?
Initially, I visited with Mike Gaul in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Career Services office. Mike helped me narrow down my search of prospective companies. From there I talked to employers at the Career Fair and was offered an interview.
What advice would you offer to other students seeking similar internships?
Research your top companies. Find out what these companies are looking for in students and what type of company they are. Then, make sure you demonstrate those qualities in the interview. Every student, no matter the age, has something to offer any company. It is simply a matter of identifying and communicating these strengths to prospective employers.
